A Rare Kind of Lighthouse
Built in 1818 and reconstructed twice, the current structure of the Land Lighthouse dates back to 1867. It was the first American lighthouse built on the Great Lakes. Its creation was vital for helping ships safely navigate into Presque Isle Bay, a harbor that was gaining importance as Erie became a hub for shipping, trade, and military activity in the early 19th century.

By 1899, as newer navigation technologies and the relocation of shipping channels reduced its importance, the lighthouse was decommissioned. The lens was removed, and the building passed through decades of change. It faced possible demolition in the 20th century, but thanks to local preservation efforts, the lighthouse was fully restored in 2003 and remains a beloved historic landmark.

The lighthouse is surrounded by a small public park, perfect for a quiet stroll or picnic. The grounds are well-kept, and interpretive signs tell the story of the lighthouse’s legacy and role in Erie’s maritime past.

The lighthouse once housed a third-order Fresnel lens, a powerful French-designed light that magnified the beam and could be seen over 17 nautical miles away. That light was manually maintained by lighthouse keepers, who lived in a nearby dwelling (now gone) and climbed the tower each night to tend the flame and clean the lens. While there are mysteries surrounding it, no one knows what happened to the original lens.
Inside the Tower
Guests enter the Oil Room where volunteers check you in and help guide you. A few pieces of merchandise are also available in this room. The interior of the tower is narrow and cylindrical, with thick sandstone walls that keep it cool even on hot days. A winding cast-iron spiral staircase hugs the inner wall, leading upward through the hollow center of the tower.

The climb is short, just over 50 feet, but the beautiful spiral iron stairs wind steeply upward inside the thick brick tower. Windows along the climb offer additional views of the surrounding area.

At the top, you’ll step into the lantern room, where light once guided ships through the fog and dark. Today, the lens is gone, but the view offers a quiet and elevated look over Lake Erie, the nearby neighborhoods, and the park below.

Since the lighthouse sits on a bluff above the city, you get a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Looking across the lake, you can view Presque Isle State Park and the North Pierhead Lighthouse. You might see boats floating in the distance and birds migrating throughout the year.

Final Thoughts
The Erie Land Lighthouse is one of three historic lighthouses in the Erie area, along with Presque Isle Lighthouse and North Pier Lighthouse. Visiting all three makes for a great themed day trip and is an inexpensive way to get a unique perspective of Erie. It is easy to get to and offers great views of the surrounding area.
