What is Altoona-Style Pizza?
Altoona-style pizza consists of a square Sicilian crust, deli salami, tomato sauce, green bell pepper, and melted yellow American cheese. Originally created at the Altoona Hotel during the 1950s, this pizza tradition carries on at some local pizza shops around town. The hotel was burned down in 2013.

29th Street Pizza, Subs & More
Our pick of pizzeria to get the slice from is 29th Street Pizza Subs & More. It is a small family owned pizzeria located on the corner of 29th Street (hence the name) and 5th Ave. They have a variety of foods all at very reasonable prices. The interior of the shop is filled with booths and tables if you wish to enjoy your food there. Although the interior of the restaurant was very hot when I visited, it was likely due to the ovens and the restaurant size.

The Verdict: Worth the Trip
The pizza is made fresh and takes several minutes to cook. The workers were incredibly nice and made me feel very welcome while waiting for the food. The pizza was fresh and had a decent weight to the slices. The fresh Sicilian bread was hot and incredibly delicious. I wish they sold the bread just by itself. The combination of toppings grew on me as I ate it, and before I knew it, the pizza was gone.

Obviously, if you don’t like American cheese, don’t try it. The cheese makes the taste very rich, but the flavors of the salami and green bell pepper compliment each other well. A pizza with American cheese is definitely a departure from the traditional pizzeria experience, but it’s an interesting twist on the classic. Whether you’re experimenting with comfort food or craving something familiar, 29th Street Pizza definitely has something for everyone all at a great price. So would you try this pizza if you’re in town?
