Soak Up the Sun at the Beaches
Presque Isle boasts eleven designated beaches along the Lake Erie shoreline. Swimming is only permitted on guarded beaches when guards are on duty. Beaches are open daily from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day from noon to 7:30 PM. It’s the perfect place for relaxing with a book or watching the waves roll in.

Paddle the Lagoons and Bays
Presque Isle is a paddler’s dream. Calm interior lagoons and inlets like Graveyard Pond and Misery Bay are perfect for kayaking or canoeing. You can launch your own boat at several locations or rent one nearby. As you paddle, you’ll glide past water lilies, hear frogs calling, and possibly even spot turtles sunning themselves on a log.

Spot Wildlife in the Wetlands
Birders and nature lovers flock to Presque Isle during the spring and fall migration seasons. The park is a designated Important Bird Area, with over 300 species observed. The marshes and forested areas are also home to deer, beavers, foxes, and an array of amphibians. Bring binoculars and visit spots like Pine Tree Trail or the Gull Point Trail for the best chance to see wildlife.

Visit the Turtle Observation Deck
Tucked away along Thompson Drive sits the Turtle Observation Deck. Overlooking a calm lagoon, a raised wooden platform gives visitors a prime view of one of Presque Isle’s most active wildlife habitats. On sunny days, painted turtles and snapping turtles can often be seen basking on logs or poking their heads through the water’s surface. In spring and early summer, you might even spot them digging nests in the nearby soft earth. The deck is easily accessible within a short walk from the parking area, making it a great stop for families or photographers.

Explore the Trails
Presque Isle’s 24.5 mile scenic trail system is perfect for walking, biking, and wildlife watching. The centerpiece is the Karl Boyes Multi-Purpose Trail, a 13.5-mile paved loop that winds past beaches, lagoons, forests, and historic landmarks like the Presque Isle Lighthouse and Perry Monument. For a quieter, more immersive nature experience, trails like Dead Pond Trail and Fox Trail lead through wooded areas and wetlands where you might spot turtles, frogs, or migrating birds.

Explore Two Iconic Lighthouses
Presque Isle State Park is home to not just one, but two historic lighthouses.
The most well-known is the Presque Isle Lighthouse, built in 1872, located near Beach 8. With its classic white tower and red brick keeper’s house, it’s a picturesque landmark that’s open for tours seasonally. Tours cost $8 for a lower-level tour, and $12 for the tour and climb. Inside, exhibits detail the history of the lighthouse, the lives of the keepers, and its role in guiding ships through the often treacherous waters of the Great Lakes. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase to the top for panoramic views of Lake Erie and the surrounding shoreline.

A second lighthouse, the North Pier Lighthouse, sits quietly at the eastern tip of the peninsula. While not open for climbing, it’s one of the most photographed spots in the park. This squat, square tower marks the entrance to Presque Isle Bay and remains an active aid to navigation. It’s a great place to watch boats coming in and out of the channel or to catch fishermen casting their lines off of the pier.

Visit the Perry Monument
On a quiet point overlooking Misery Bay stands the Perry Monument. This towering obelisk honors Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the naval commander who led American forces to victory during the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. This peaceful site commemorates both a pivotal moment in U.S. history and the role Presque Isle Bay played in that conflict. The monument is surrounded by shaded walking paths and interpretive signs that tell the story of the battle and the construction of Perry’s fleet right here in Erie.

Final Thoughts
Whether you’re planning a beach day, a wildlife-watching adventure, or a peaceful walk through nature, Presque Isle State Park delivers an unforgettable experience on the shores of Lake Erie. No matter the season, there’s always something to explore, photograph, or simply enjoy at your own pace.
