The Junkyard Comes Alive at Schaefer’s Auto Art!

Just off of the highway in Erie, Pa sits a remarkable public art display made entirely of used auto parts! Dick Schaefer started this display in 1988 when he became fascinated with this unique art style, and it has since turned into a roadside treasure that is fun for the whole family!

Location

The display is located at 3705 Hershey Rd, Erie, PA 16506 and open year round from dawn to dusk. It is located at a private residence with a small gravel pull off on the side of the road. Do not use the driveway and there are signs not to park in the driveway. Guests are welcome to walk through the lawn to view the art.

The area isn’t that large as most of the art can be viewed from the road. It is recommended to park and get a closer look at the creations.

The display can vary at times, but staples include a 40-foot rocket, a VW Bug spider, a police car, and a giant bumblebee surrounded by metal flowers!

A Two Headed Dinosaur

Visitors are encouraged to explore and to get up close. It is fun when you can determine what each sculpture is made from. Spark plugs used as teeth, a chest made from a Subaru engine, and fans used as petals for flowers.

Be sure to look all throughout the area. Some sculptures are supported high in the air, or hang in the trees. Is it a satellite, a robot, or something else?!

The Buzz Box

Visitors can leave feedback and notes in The Buzz Box. A mailbox at the front of the property that fits into the theme of the area.
