Regional History
The area was a dream for lumbermills as vast dense forests populated the mountains. Early settlers used the wood as fuel for iron furnaces as well. The mid-1860s brought the discovery of oil. Forests were cleared and wells were drilled. Wood and petroleum products were made and sold using the Allegheny river as a trade route.

Oil drilling spurred population growth in the are in the late 19th century. The land was stripped of is vegetation for oil wells to be installed. While new laws and regulations are now in place, the area is still harvested for its lumber but done so with protections for the future in mind.

Kennerdell is named after the Kennerdell family who immigrated to the US in 1826. At its height, the family operated a sawmill, gristmill, blacksmith, woolen mill, dye house, and general store. A schoolhouse and church were also constructed at the direction of Richard Kennerdell to aid the growing community.
