Tucked away in the Mexican War Streets of Pittsburgh’s Northside lies the City of Asylum. Residences dedicated to housing endangered artists from all over the world.

Location

These residences are located between the 300 – 400 block of Sampsonia Way. Parking is located on the surrounding streets. The street is on a public road so be cautious of vehicles driving past while you view the houses.

Exploring the City of Asylum

The City of Asylum first created these publicized these houses in 2004. The goal is to create an public library of published houses that people can read as they walk along Sampsonia Way.

The city of Asylum has 5 houses. The Comma House, House Poem, Jazz House, Pittsburgh-Burma House, and Winged House. Each house showcases the work on an exiled writer, artist, or poet.

Local interactive art instillation

The area is filled with local art creations. The Mattress Factory, a modern art museum, is located at the western end of the block, and Randyland is located just to the east. Local residences have also found ways to express themselves by including things such as the letter magnets on a garage that you can interact with.

While strolling through the area, please be respectful when visiting. These homes are private residences. Do not trespass or cause a disturbance.
