Cantilever Galleries
A majority of the gallery space is located on the second floor. Guests are asked to start in the Cantilever Gallery, which features larger rotating exhibits. During my visit, the works by the Florida Highwaymen and Jordan Ann Craig were on display.

The Florida Highwaymen were self-taught African American artists who created vibrant landscape paintings during the mid-20th century, often selling their work along roadsides and in small markets. The paintings showcase lush coastal scenes, dramatic sunsets, and serene marshlands that reflect the rapidly disappearing natural beauty of Florida.

It Takes a Long Time to Stay Here is a striking series of paintings by contemporary artist Jordan Ann Craig. Inspired in part by the patterns and traditions of Navajo weaving, Craig’s work features layered bands of vibrant color that create a sense of movement and rhythm across each canvas. While abstract in style, the compositions often evoke landscapes and horizons of the American Southwest.

Modern & Contemporary Galleries
The museum’s Modern & Contemporary Galleries present a dynamic shift from historical art to bold experimentation. As of early 2026, the museum’s Steel Valley Visions exhibit explores the powerful history and cultural impact of the steel industry in Western Pennsylvania.

Through paintings, photographs, and multimedia displays, the exhibit highlights the mills, workers, and communities that helped shape the region for generations. Artwork captures the dramatic glow of furnaces, steel plants, and the demanding labor that takes place inside them.

The Steel Valley Visions Immersive Experience is a unique digital exhibit that brings the artwork in this exhibit to life. Paintings previously seen on the walls are transformed through multi-projection displays, surround sound, and animated effects that create a dynamic viewing experience. Visitors are encouraged to take a seat and immerse themselves in the presentation. It can often feel as though you’ve stepped directly inside the artwork itself.

Historical Galleries
The Historical Galleries provide a window into America’s past through portraits, landscapes, and decorative arts. These galleries highlight works from the 18th and 19th centuries, emphasizing early American craftsmanship and the cultural context of the time.

Visitors encounter portraits of prominent figures, rural life, and curated decorative objects that offer insights into earlier generations. Exhibits have included Domestic Life in the 19th Century and Treasures from the National Academy of Design, which showcases works from one of the nation’s oldest and most respected artistic institutions.

The museum’s collection of Fraktur art offers a fascinating look at a distinctive form of folk art that developed among Westmorland County schoolteachers during the 18th and 19th centuries. Fraktur pieces are known for their elaborate lettering, decorative borders, and colorful illustrations of birds, flowers, and symbolic motifs.

Paneled Rooms
Among the museum’s most distinctive spaces are the beautifully designed Paneled Rooms. Built in London, England during the 18th century, the rooms were given to the museum in the 20th century by an anonymous donor. These rooms feature rich wood paneling, decorative moldings, and fireplaces. The cases serve as where windows once were.

The museum uses these rooms as gallery spaces themselves, and one striking example is the exhibition A Fountain of Forms: The Rise of the American Woman Sculptor. This show highlights the creativity and determination of female sculptors during a period when the art world was largely male-dominated. Works that range from classical realism to early modernist experimentation. Visitors can explore intimate busts, dynamic full-figure sculptures, and delicate studies in clay and bronze.

Children’s Activities and Family Programs
Children can participate in hands-on art activities, interactive exhibits, and themed workshops designed to spark creativity and curiosity. Families can also pick up activity guides that encourage exploration of the galleries in fun, educational ways. Seasonal programs, like summer art camps and holiday workshops, provide additional opportunities for kids to connect with art.

Final Thoughts
The Westmoreland Museum of American Art offers a rich mix of history, culture, and creativity. Rotating exhibits throughout the year means that there is always something new to see, along with something for every visitor. With free admission, it’s an accessible cultural destination worth returning to again and again.
