The Big Coffee Pot

History

In 1927, Bert Koontz created this large coffee pot building to attract motorists as they traveled along the Lincoln Highway. The building originally opened as a lunch stop down the road with a gas station located next to it. 10 years later, it transitioned into a bar and a hotel was built behind the structure.

As travelers moved to using newer superhighways, many structures along the Lincoln Highway like this became obsolete. Many unique structures like this have been lost to time.

As the years went on, the building fell into disrepair. Luckily, the people of Bedford loved their coffee pot so much that locals planned on saving it. In 2003, the structure was moved to its current location and restored to how it appears today!

Informational sign and donation box

An informational sign and donation box stand outside the structure. While you can’t go inside, it still makes for a unique photo op! Donations help pay for the upkeep of the structure.
