Directions and Info
Spruce Flats Bog is located within Forbes Forest and Laurel Summit State Park on the border of Westmoreland and Somerset Counties. A large gravel lot at 40.118303, -79.176097 is available for parking as well as the trail head.
Located near the parking lot are restrooms and a pavilion. The park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset. It is unclear if this area is cleared in the winter, so use caution when exploring in the colder months.
Visitors should remain on the path and boardwalk at all times to protect the wildlife.

A Unique Ecosystem
From the parking lot, a short and level 0.25-mile walk along a flat, crushed-stone path leads you to the bog. The trail is well-marked and suitable for visitors of all ages and fitness levels.

The boardwalk and observation platform provide an excellent vantage point to appreciate the bog’s beauty without disturbing its delicate environment. Informational signs along the boardwalk offer insights into the bog’s formation, ecology, and the flora and fauna that inhabit it.

Spruce Flats Bog is formed in an area that was once covered by a dense hemlock forest, which was clear-cut in the early 1900s. Without trees, the water accumulation led to the development of the bog, an ecosystem characterized by acidic, nutrient-poor conditions.

One of the unique characteristics of the bog is the windswept trees. Strong winds from the west bend the tree tops east. This phenomenon is often called Krummholz, meaning crooked wood.

While this stop isn’t worth a trip just for itself, it does make for a very educational and easy stop. If you are in the area looking for a quick, unique hike, then you should definitely check it out!
